First Project: Holyrood Park – 13th Sept

On what turned out to be a very sunny Saturday (yes, really!) we ventured out to Holyrood Park for our first project of the year. After a short walk up the hill we arrived at our work site overlooking St. Margaret’s Loch. We got to work sawing and lopping down gorse bushes to create a vertical firebreak in a large swath of gorse that stretched across the hill; we even discovered a toad among the bushes and Rosie and I got very excited about a family of swans down on the Loch. The views were beautiful and everyone had a great time getting to grips with the prickly gorse, eating gorgeous homemade cookies and, of course, devouring the timeless Dirties’ sandwich. After descending from the hill and playing some games, we made our way to the Auld Hoose to indulge in masses of nachos, chips and beer.

First project!

Welcome (old and new!) to the wonderful world of dirties wordpress!

The first project of the semester is on Saturday 13th September, where we will be clearing gorse bushes for firebreaks in Holyrood park with loppers and saws! We’ll meet at 10am in Bristo Square and will get back around 4.30pm, you’re also welcome to come and go as you please. We will provide a yummy free homemade lunch! Afterwards we’ll head to the Auld Hoose pub for Nachos and good beer. So come prepared to have an awesome time, meeting new people and getting into some good old conservation tasks! Don’t forget to bring some water, a waterproof, decent shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting wrecked.

Can’t wait till Saturday?

Come find us at the societies fair on Wednesday and Thursday, 11am – 4pm in the highland room at the Pleasence. We will also be in the Auld Hoose pub on Thursday at 9pm.

We’re looking forward to meeting you!

Summer hiatus + new committee!

20140316_190116

As you will probably be aware, there has not been a project for a while. Many of you will just be finishing up exams and getting ready for the summer! Don’t despair, as we will still be making regular visits to the pub.

In April we had our AGM and elections of new committe members to take over after the summer. Our new committee is as follows:

President – Josephine Van Den Brink
Secretary –  Rose Almond
Projects – John Godlee + Emma Graf
Food – Margaret Bolton, Rosie Fitzmaurice + Amy McCombes
Socials – Morna Brown + Rebecca Rodgers
Bothies – Nina Lindstrom Friggens, Cameron Fox-Clarke + Rosie Fitzmaurice
Transport – Emma Graf
Tools – John Godlee
Webspinner – Rose Almond

You may notice there are positions with 3 people where there were previously two. Due to the smaller number of committee members this year some have take on responsibility for multiple roles. Sharing these roles should alleviate some pressure for each member and help the smooth running of the society.

Keep an eye on the site for updates on our return to action! Or alternatively check our facebook page. Committee page to be updated soon.
