A Crash Course in Conservation – the recap

Posts are running later than usual this week – This is mainly from Innovative Learning Week laziness being swamped by uni work. Yeah, that must be it.

Slightly different style of post today, but get comfy by the fire to hear James’s take on the ILW project (19th Feb):

“Excerpts from the upcoming novel: ‘The Dirty City’.

It was a typically muggy Edinburgh Wednesday morning. Johm Gubley looked around fervently. Never in his wildest dreams had he been expecting this. A project! On a Wednesday! With new gloves! Johm loved new gloves.

It was either the tree or him. One of them had to be cut down. The ranger had been graphically clear on the matter. Johm gripped the saw tightly and grimaced.

He smiled as he looked at the state of the freshly maintained path. By gum it was so clean he could eat his lunch off of it.

He did.

“I love carrot cake!” said Johm, even if some deviant did put raisins in it. “From now on we’ll have carrot cake on every single project ever”, he added, in the presence of several lawyers.

Any characters bearing resemblance to actual persons living or dead is purely coincidence.”

So. Thank you, James. Here are some photos from the day courtesy of John (not to be mistaken for Johm) – Full gallery here

Apologies to anyone that came out for the Roslin Glen project last week. The weather unfortunately prevented it from going ahead.

Updates on pottery social on the 20th March coming soon. Remember you can join us at the pub around 17:30 today (Sunday 2nd) if you can’t make it to the project.

Updates on Upcoming Projects

There will be no project this Sunday, instead we will be climbing Arthur’s Seat before meeting at the Auld Hoose. Meeting point will be outside the Pollock Halls entrance at 1pm.

Next week is the University of Edinburgh’s ‘Innovative Learning Week’ and there is no better way to learn (in an innovative way) than to join us on our ILW project on Wednesday 19th!

A CRASH COURSE IN CONSERVATION!

A project ideal for beginners, we will be visiting Beeslack Wood, near Penicuik. For photos of the site, click here. As always, there will be free transport from the CSE and free home made food for lunch.

If you want to join us, the number of places is capped at a generous 40, so you should sign up at ilwcalendar.co.uk
You can join the Facebook event too by following this link.

We will meet at the Centre for Sport and Exercise at 10am, returning around 5:30pm. If you’ve not yet ventured out with us, this is your chance!

Burnt trees (and marshmallows) – Project #4 Vogrie

On Sunday we went to Vogrie Country Park. Here’s a synopsis of the day from Eluned:

“This rather blustery Sunday saw us at the beautiful Vogrie Country Park near Gorebridge. Greeted at the entrance by the gate-keeper and a heard of doggies we soon found our way to the area of woodland where the ranger, Alan, had marked some trees for removal. We got straight to our destructive work and with many shouts of “timber!” the poor little trees were soon littering the ground awaiting snedding (branch removal) and sawing. We made several habitat-piles for wildlife with the felled trees and collected the rest to be burnt.

After our lovely soupy lunch a small group split off to try to get a fire going to clear some pre-cut rhododendron nearby but the fire struggled to get going with the damp wood. Meanwhile the fire in the woodland was roaring through the felled trees and as always, marshmallows miraculously appeared for toasting. It was a great day out, despite the drizzle, and we all left well smoked and happy.”
